Christmas in Vanceburg

Monday, December 2007: With newly re-discovered 1960s vintage street
decorations installed, the City of Vanceburg and others were up and
ready to celebrate the season with a number of events.

Anthony Carroll kicked it off with a Holiday Art Show from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Saturday, December 8, at the Vanceburg Depot Museum, with new
drawings all priced to sell for that perfect gift.

The hugely popular Churches by Candlelight Tour headed into its fourth
year at 6 p.m. Wednesday, December 12, starting at the Lewis County
Courthouse at the corner of Second and Court Streets. The Lewis County
High School Band and Choir were in concert on the third floor. The tour
followed to the Vanceburg Christian Church on Front Street, then to
Vanceburg Methodist Church on Second Street, and end at First Baptist
Church on Market Street. The tour included a talk about the history of the
churches, each being at least 130 years old, and featured entertainment
at each stop. This event was listed in the December issue of
Southern
Living Magazine.

The Lewis County Chamber of Commerce hosted an Open House,
sponsored by Head of Happy Hollow Farm, from 1 to 5 p.m. on Thursday,
December 13, at the George Morgan Thomas Home. Several people
stopped by to view the holiday decorations, have some refreshments,
learn more about the Chamber and dropped off gifts in the Chamber's gift
box to be turned over to Lend a Helping Hand Food Pantry.

A Christmas parade stepped off at 10 a.m. Saturday, December 15, starting
at the old Vanceburg Grade School on West Second Street. The route
continued to Second Street to Court Street to Third Street to Main Street
and back to West Second Street.

After the parade, children had the chance to "Talk with Santa" from 2 to 4
p.m. at the George Morgan Thomas Home/Vanceburg Visitors Center.
Santa was in the Music Room on the first floor to meet children and hear
their Christmas wishes. Santa's helpers will be took pictures (for a
nominal fee) and Santa served milk and cookies!
